Over the next few weeks we will be looking at Probability.

Probability is the chance that something will happen - how likely it is that some event will occur.

Sometimes you can measure a probability with a number like "10% chance", or you can use words such as impossible, unlikely, possible, even chance, likely and certain.

Example: "It is unlikely to rain tomorrow".

Speech Board

Speech Board

Speech Board is up and running with all children part of a group for poems.
Please encourage your child to practise their part at home along with any actions their group may have chosen to do. Give some advice and feedback about how it is sounding.

Year 4 - Need to be practising their talk and thinking about any other props they might like to bring along to add to their talk.

Year 5- Need to make sure their talk is about an experience they have had or been part of. This builds on their work from last year, adding a new challenge. Also think about other props they might like to bring to add to their talk.

We will be practising our poems and talks in school time but extra practise at home is encouraged. It is also helpful as with a large class it can be difficult to get to everyone at once, your support at home is appreciated.

Remember they are talks not speeches and our photos are there to guide us, and help remind us what it is we want to talk about and share.

Calendar Art

Calendar Art is underway and will be reading for viewing in the next week or so.
Order forms will come home next week.

What’s happening in Room 5        Term 3 Week 2 Update
Maths
We are all working on fractions for the next week or two.
sharing equally, reading symbols for fractions, finding fractions of groups,
using repeated addition to solve fractions eg 3+3+3+3=12 so ¼  of 12 = 3
Know the symbols for fractions and what they mean,
Order fractions with the same denominator, use addition to solve fractions,
know proper and improper fractions
Find fractions of whole numbers eg ¾ of 24 = ? or ¾ of what is 21?
Compare fraction sizes with whole numbers, 37/7 = 5 2/7 (improper fractions)
Ratios 2:3
Writing
We are looking at simple poetry forms to help us build on our knowledge and use
of figurative language.
Figurative language is things like metaphors, similies, alliteration, onomatopoeia.
We then move into speech board.
Reading
We are all working on comprehension activities.
We are working our way through a variety of texts looking at
all the strategies we use to help us when having to find information in a text.
We have been talking about skimming, scanning, pictures, labels,
thinking about the five w’s who what where why when and how. The key word.
Inquiry
Te Whenua (The land)
we are beginning by looking at our school and personal pepeha. T
This is helping the children to understand their connection to Toko
or where they are from and why home and our place is important.
Kia Kaha
Every Friday at 11.45 Johno the Police Education officer will be in to run the
kia kaha programme with the class.
It is an anti bullying programme and you are more than welcome to join the sessions.
PLEASE if you have any concerns about your children feel free to pop in and see me
or if you prefer an email. As what I observe may not be the whole picture.
Technology
A new app is being trialed in the class.
It is an online reading app.
It is free for educators to use in the class so children should
only be able to access this when at school.
If you would like them to use it at home I can add your email to our class link
and then it is free for you at home.
Otherwise you can sign up to the parent one at home but that one costs you.
I just haven’t give the students the choice of using it at home because
it then means another security pin they have to remember,
and most students have plenty of books to read at home.
Sports
This term is the school x-country so we will be out training most days.
Sometimes it will be a run and sometimes we will play games that
encourage fitness skills.
X-country date is set for Friday 31 August.
Rural Schools X-country is Thursday 6 September.
Production
The teachers are in discussions and negotiations around the school production.
All will be sorted this term ready for rehearsals in Term 4.

Book Week

Here we are looking gorgeous for book week. It was so cool to see all the different costumes and the wide variety of characters from their favourite books.

Friday 25 May 2018

Today we had to work with Mrs Oliver to complete our plan for our next piece of writing.
We were then given the opportunity to choose from a range of literacy activities. The whole class decided to make their mum's a card. Some students found some creative and interesting cards to make, others found some interesting verses they could use.
Would love to share the photos of us hard at work....but the computer won't let me. Waiting for I.T genius to sort it.

Welcome to term 2 in Room 5.

Thank you for my warm welcome to your school. It has been an awesome week getting to know your children and you.

Feel free to pop in and see us at any stage. We love an extra pair of hands...

It takes a while to set up a new class and get things up and going. Hopefully we will all adapt quickly to the changes, and be off and running. Please feel free to communicate through the homework book or email me.
